 The Khalistan movement is a separatist movement that seeks to establish an independent state for Sikhs in Punjab, India. The movement originated in the 1970s, in response to perceived discrimination against Sikhs by the Indian government and a desire for greater autonomy for the Punjab region. The term "Khalistan" means "Land of the Pure" in Punjabi, and it was first coined by Jagjit Singh Chauhan, a Sikh nationalist leader who was living in London at the time. The Khalistan movement gained momentum in the 1980s, as violence and unrest erupted in Punjab. The main militant group associated with the movement was the Khalistan Commando Force, which carried out a series of terrorist attacks against Indian security forces, government officials, and civilians.
